This fall, the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) is celebrating its 140th Anniversary and 125th year on the Edgewood campus.
Founded in 1869, WPSD is still a tuition-free school with high academic expectations. Over 250 children from birth through twelfth grade are served through the campus in Edgewood. And beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, WPSD will administer the academic and extra-curricular programs for the Scranton School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children (SSDHHC) with over 90 children enrolled from preschool through twelfth grade. Both schools embrace an all inclusive communications environment with the goal of fluency in both English and American Sign Language.
We invite you to continue the tradition of excellence through your support
of the 2009 Fall-In Auction & Gala. This year’s event will be held on
Saturday, November 7th at the Heinz History Center in the strip district from 6:00 -9:30 p.m.
How can you help?
You can donate an item for the auction, make a monetary donation to offset costs, become a sponsor for the event and/or attend the gala and enjoy a wonderful evening of friends, food and support for this outstanding educational asset.
In addition to supporting WPSD, you will receive visibility to hundreds of the school’s influential patrons on our website and at the event. And of course, your donation is tax deductible.
Tickets are available for purchase for $100 each at wpsd.org/special_events.html.

A North Belle Vernon woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident Saturday morning on Toll Route 43 in Fallowfield Township.
Washington County Coroner S. Tim Warco Sunday identified the woman as being 24-year-old Erin Marie Myers. Her identity had been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Myers was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:48 a.m. She died of multiple blunt force traum, said Warco.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Kia sedan was also identified Sunday as being Kenneth L. Lloyd, 28, of North Belle Vernon. Lloyd was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following the 6:45 a.m. crash. No information was available about his condition.
State police said both Myers and Lloyd were ejected from the vehicle when it rolled over several times after hitting the dirt medial. Police said an unknown object raveled in front of Lloyd’s vehicle causing him to swerve and lose control.

Alumni Association of the WPSD is hosting the ninth annual WPSD Cup on Saturday, September 12th 2009. The place will be at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania near Route 40.
About 80 miles southeast from the city of Pittsburgh, in the Laurel Highlands region, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is a great place to stay and play.
The resort has two golf courses. We will be playing at the one called ‘The Links’. The Links is a beautifully-landscaped course with a breathtaking view of the forest and the ponds.
The tournament cost is $85 per person. This includes green fees, cart rental, prizes and admission to the reception. For non-golfer to join reception, it will be $30 per person.
Paul Blahut is the fourth year chairperson of WPSD Cup.
For those of you who are not avid golfers, do not fret. This golf tournament will be run in a scramble format which allows any level of golfer to be on a winning team.
